Frequently Asked Questions About Myofunctional Therapy

  • Myofunctional re-education typically takes 6-12 sessions, dependent on the diagnosis and treatment plan. Sessions take place every 2 weeks over approximately 3-7 months.

  • Many patients notice improvements within the first 3-6 sessions, while some notice improvements after only 1-2 sessions.

  • No referral is needed. You can scheduled with me directly.

  • Each session includes time to discuss your questions, concerns, and/or difficulties. Previous exercises will be reviewed to evaluate progress and new, personalized exercises will be provided.

  • No. Myofunctional re-education is designed to strengthen muscles safely and gently. You may feel effort, but you should not feel pain.

  • Yes. Practicing at home is essential for success and usually takes 5 minutes twice a day for the active exercises. Some of the passive exercises, which can be done while relaxing, watching television, commuting, or reading range from 5-30 minutes once a day.

  • Many insurance plans do not cover myofunctional re-education. It is advised that you check with your plan to determine if coverage is eligible. I can provide invoices and superbills for you to submit for possible reimbursement.

  • Yes. Many patients use their HSAs or FSAs to pay for myofunctional re-education. Invoices and superbills, will be provided for submission. It is advised to check with your plan administrator to confirm eligibility.

  • Flexible payment options and third-party financing may be available for qualifying patients. I’m happy to discuss payment options during our consultation to help make treatment as accessible as possible.

  • It is ideal that you have a small to medium-sized mirror at home for your exercises. I will provide you with with a myofunctional therapy tool kit that has the other items that you’ll need.

  • Yes. I collaborate with orthodontists, dentists, chiropractors, craniosacral therapists, massage therapists, speech language pathologists, and ENT specialists to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care as needed.
